The 2nd Highland Light Infantry battalion of 5 Brigade, 2nd Division had fought in the Battle of Loos in September and October 1915 and had suffered many casualties. At some time, as yet not known, Arthur Smith had been wounded whilst serving with the battalion and was being brought back to England aboard the Hospital Ship Anglia when, on 17th November, 1915 she hit a mine laid by the German submarine UC-5 when just off the coast near Folkestone. Within 15 minutes the ship sank and he was one of the 164 people that lost their lives. |
